INDIANAPOLIS (May 12, 2026) – The U.S. Census Bureau recently released statewide totals for building permits issued in March and shows 1,824 single-family permits were pulled. The 1,824 permits pulled in March of 2026 are up 45% from the 1,256 permits pulled in February of 2026. This number is up 8% from March of 2025, when 1,689 permits were pulled. The single-family permit numbers (4,294) for 2026 are down 3% compared to the first three months of 2025 (4,441).
“These March permit numbers are an encouraging sign for Indiana’s housing market and the strength of our home building industry. A 45% increase from February and an 8% increase over March of last year show that demand for new housing remains strong across our state.” said Marcy DeShong, IBA President. “While year-to-date permit activity is slightly behind 2025, this momentum is a positive indicator as we head into the busy spring and summer building season. Indiana’s builders remain committed to meeting housing demand and creating opportunities for more Hoosiers to achieve homeownership.”
Indiana continues to lead the Midwest in single-family housing growth, outpacing neighboring states including Ohio (1,560), Michigan (1,266), Illinois (980), and Kentucky (843). With 1,824 single-family permits pulled in March, Indiana remains a strong leader in residential construction across the region.
