INDIANAPOLIS (July 25, 2025) – Indiana single-family building permits decreased in June, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest data. A total of 1,811 single-family permits were issued in June 2025, a 13% decline from the 2,048 permits pulled in May 2025.
June’s permit total is also down 6% compared to the same month last year, when 1,921 permits were issued. Despite the monthly dip, year-to-date numbers remain ahead of last year. Through the first six months of 2025, Indiana saw 10,319 permits pulled, up 3% from the 10,038 permits issued during the same period in 2024.
“This slowdown aligns with national trends. Single-family permits, construction starts, and new home sales are all down on a year-to-date basis nationally. Elevated mortgage interest rates, rising construction costs, and broader economic uncertainty continue to challenge housing affordability,” said Rick Wajda, IBA CEO. “Despite these headwinds, Indiana’s market has shown resilience with year-to-date growth, which is an encouraging sign.”
Indiana continues to lead the Midwest in new single-family housing growth, again outpacing neighboring states Ohio (1,586), Michigan (1,529), Illinois (1,203), and Kentucky (704).
