INDIANAPOLIS (August 27, 2025) – Indiana single-family building permits decreased in July, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s latest data. A total of 1,766 single-family permits were issued in July 2025, a 3% decline from the 1,811 permits pulled in June 2025. The single-family permit numbers (12,085) for 2025 are up 3% compared to the first seven months of 2024 (11,725).
The 1,766 permits pulled in July of 2025 are up 5% from the 1,687 permits pulled in July of 2024, and the second highest July monthly permit numbers in the last 10 years.
“Even with the slight dip in July, Indiana’s permit activity continues to reflect steady demand for new housing. The fact that we are ahead of last year’s pace shows that buyers remain motivated despite higher interest rates and ongoing affordability challenges.” said Ryan Baker, IBA President. “Builders across the state are working hard to meet that demand, and Indiana remains well-positioned as a leader in the Midwest housing market.”
Indiana continues to lead the Midwest in new single-family housing growth, again outpacing neighboring states Michigan (1,454), Ohio (1,386), Illinois (1,040), and Kentucky (730).
