INDIANAPOLIS (March 27, 2026) – The U.S. Census Bureau recently released statewide totals for building permits issued in January and shows 1,214 single-family permits were pulled.  The 1,214 permits pulled in January of 2026 are down 10% from the 1,353 permits pulled in January of 2025.  This number is down 6% from December of 2025, when 1,293 permits were pulled.

“While January’s permit numbers reflect a modest slowdown compared to last year and the previous month, Indiana continues to demonstrate its strength and resilience in the housing market,” said Rick Wajda, IBA CEO. “We remain the leading state in the Midwest for single-family construction and rank 12th nationally, outperforming many of our neighboring states. That consistency speaks to the underlying demand for housing in Indiana and the continued confidence builders have in our market.”

Indiana remains the Midwest leader in single-family housing growth, surpassing neighboring states including Ohio (1,047), Michigan (716), Illinois (535), and Kentucky (513). Nationally, Indiana ranks 12th in single-family permits issued in January 2026.
