INDIANAPOLIS (September 26, 2025) – The U.S. Census Bureau recently released statewide data on building permits issued in August, reporting that 1,711 single-family permits were pulled. The 1,711 permits pulled in August of 2025 are down 3% from the 1,766 permits pulled in July of 2025.  This number is down 15% from August of 2024, when 2,013 permits were pulled.  The single-family permit numbers (13,796) for 2025 are basically flat compared to the first eight months of 2024 (13,738).

“While permit activity slowed slightly in August compared to last year, Indiana’s home building market remains strong relative to our neighbors. With nearly 14,000 single-family permits pulled so far in 2025, we are holding steady with 2024 levels and continue to lead the Midwest in housing growth” said Rick Wajda, IBA CEO. “This demonstrates the resilience of Indiana’s housing market and the ongoing demand for new single-family homes in our state.”

Indiana remains the Midwest leader in single-family housing growth, surpassing neighboring states including Ohio (1,380), Michigan (1,337), Illinois (1,043), and Kentucky (684). Nationally, Indiana ranks 9th in single-family permits issued in August 2025.
